Welcome to the Intelligent Cargo Systems Academy

Uncover the secrets of port call optimisation.

The Intelligent Cargo Systems team spends thousands of hours annually observing, analysing and discussing container ship port call operations.

We do this to continuously improve our CargoMate platform so that our users can optimise their port calls, minimise delays and unexpected events, and make ship turnarounds as efficient as possible.

There is a breadth of information for container terminal operations written from the perspective of container terminal operators, but very little for container carrier port captains, port superintendents, vessel schedulers and Masters, Chief Officers and officers/crewmembers who want to optimise their port calls. We’ll address this gap through sharing our knowledge and experience.

We encourage discussion and feedback on the articles below. If there is a topic you want us to cover, you can contact us at hello@intelligentcargosystems.com

Container ship operations - What is a port call?

The concept of a port call — when a ship stops at a port to load and unload cargo — seems straightforward. This article looks at the basics of a container ship port call, from planning for arrival to departing for the next destination, so you can master the basics and elevate your port calls.

Double Cycling - Reduce ship turnaround time by 10%

Double-cycling of quay cranes is a cargo operations optimisation technique. It’s a key turnaround time consideration to be discussed between the container terminal and shipping company port captains, port superintendents and vessel operations managers.

Chassis operations - Trucks and trailers for efficient containership turnaround

Port superintendents are tasked with maximizing vessel turnaround efficiency. A pivotal yet often overlooked aspect of this process is the container terminal’s process during chassis operations. This article examines chassis use, comparisons with roll trailers, berth and container terminal spatial challenges, the importance of safety and efficiency in terminal operations, and highlights times when a slowdown of operations may occur.

Straddle Carriers - Can they affect cargo completion time?

For vessel operators, fleet managers, and port captains/superintendents, understanding the impact of straddle carrier operations on cargo operations performance is vital. The operation of straddle carriers by a container terminal can directly affect gantry/berth productivity and container ships' cargo operations completion time.
